Data Centers and Government Overreach: Repeal House Bill 2014

Data centers require huge amounts of electricity and water to operate. They increase the utility bills of local residents and negatively affect local quality of life. West Virginia House Bill 2014 took away power from local government representatives to approve or even regulate data center projects. The state government in Charleston has used this power to push through approval for a planned $4 billion data center in Berkeley County over the heads of local representatives and residents.

I don’t think the state government should take away authority from local representatives and residents. TheRealWV reported on the first public meeting held about the proposed Berkeley County data center. Hundreds of local residents, most from District 95, attended to express their opposition to the project and to government overreach.

It will be a hard fight, but I pledge to oppose the construction of the proposed data center in Berkeley County and to support the repeal of House Bill 2014.
